About

sistersA Quick Run Down

My name is Vyolent GriMm, legally it’s Jessica Graves but I’ve been GriMm for so long that it almost feels wrong to be called anything else. I’m an Iowa native, I’ve called it home all my life but I’ve lived all over Iowa. I’m a mother of two, a boy and a girl. I play roller derby for Team United, hence the  name, Vyolent GriMm. Professionally, I’m a web designer. I graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 2014 but I’ve been working in art and design most of my life; I just keep expanding the various mediums that entails.

A Little Background

As a child I began drawing, painting and then eventually creating things that were otherwise unattainable. To clarify our family couldn’t afford the extras fun interesting things or they weren’t available in our area. I found myself creating many DIY items and clothing. This later turned to sculpting figures, decorating my in spooky creations and recording music. Anything I could create myself, I did. I’ve always had a love for creating.

Past Life Experiences

Before I got to where I am now, I was a licensed Cosmetologist. While I was in beauty school I met many people. I worked with a promotions group working with local bands, it was a very memorable time of my life. I helped with fliers designs but always wanted to do more. I’d also spent a lot of time, following that, working with local artists. I found myself again wish I had a way to promote this artists more.

Eventually, life as a hairstylist in the area wasn’t quite living up to my expectations. I wanted to be much more creative, make a difference with my work and decided to return to school in 2010. I began working toward my degree, majoring in Web Design and Interactive Media. So that brings us to now.

Derby Exploits

I’ve told you about my professional side but here’s the crazy, fun side. I’ve been a roller derby player since late 2009. I’ve played in far more games that I can count and beat teams I never thought possible. I love this sport. It’s not all the silly theatrics people imagine, in fact teams take this very serious. I take this very serious, I am there captain and our success is important to me.

I’ve dedicated much time and practice this sport in the last several years and it’s paying off wonderfully. I won’t say there haven’t been pitfalls (broken ankles that required surgery and permanent metal fixtures attached), but with every little struggle I realize how unbelievably determined I am to achieve my goals. This has leaked over into my normal, everyday life. I am determined to better myself every day.

Well, you get the point, in a nutshell life is very interesting around here.
